Very few books out there can be considered rare at all.
So, many book enthusiasts (especially collectors) may wonder what constitutes a rare book.
The simple answer you will probably hear over and over again is the following ‘A rare book is any book where the demand exceeds the supply‘.
Okay, this definition is technically correct. But what exactly makes a huge number of people desire a specific book such that it becomes rare?
Let’s find out.
Factors that Cause Books to Become Rare
A book can be in high demand (and ultimately rare) due to one or more of the below factors. The more of them apply, the more rare and valuable the book may become.
1) Importance
The content inside the book could have a historical, cultural, or scientific significance. One famous example is the first edition of Codex of Leicester, which contains a collection of scientific writings by Leonardo da Vinci. It was last sold to Bill Gates in November 1994 at a New York auction for almost 31 million US dollars at the time.
2) Artwork
The book might have distinct artwork(s) on the cover itself and/or the pages inside. The Birds of America is a prime example of an extremely rare book with beautiful and unique paintings. In December 2019, a complete copy of the first edition was sold at auction in New York for $6.6 million.
3) Edition
The first edition might be scarce and highly sought-after by collectors compared to the other editions. For example, a first edition copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in pristine condition, sold for $216,000 at auction in New York in June 2024.
4) Signature
It could be one of the few copies that are signed by the author, which results in a higher price. For instance, a signed first edition copy of How to Trade in Stocks by Jesse Livermore sold for $40,000 on AbeBooks in 2022 while you can find unsigned copies for $6,000 or less.
5) Completeness
For books that originally come with a slipcase or dust-jacket, missing that piece alone can significantly lower the book’s desirability and value. For instance, a first edition of The Great Gatsby (which is quite rare) without the jacket might sell for about $3,000 to $4,000 while a copy with the dust jacket in excellent condition can fetch $350,000.
6) Condition
The book might be extremely scarce to find in a perfect condition while the other conditions are more common. As an example, an extensively-used library copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone sold for around $88,000 in 2023 while the same book in a pristine shape may command over $200,000 (as indicated above).

7) Provenance
The book copy could have been owned by an important person such as a major historical figure or maybe the author himself. Books that might be worth a mere $40 on their own could cost six figures if they come from George Washington’s personal library.
8) Adaptation
There might be an elevated interest in the book due to a relevant adaptation in the form of movies, TV shows, stage plays, or even video games. For example, numerous film adaptations of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (originally published in 1813) have kept this classic novel in the spotlight, making early editions highly cherished by collectors. A first edition copy sold at a New York auction for around $190,000 in October 2025.
9) Scarcity
The book may have been published in a limited quantity which results in scarcity. One of the 200 limited/signed copies of the US edition of The Commodore by Patrick O’Brian currently would cost you a minimum of $350 versus the original price of $125 (almost triple the amount).
10) Size
The book’s size could be very small (miniature) or extra large which makes it instantly unique and valuable. For instance, One of the world’s smallest books has been sold at an auction in Brussels for €4,200 ($4,964) in December 2021.
11) Author
It can be desirable simply because it was written by a popular author such as Stephen King. Many first editions of his books (e.g. The Gunslinger and The Shining) easily command four figures, if not more.
12) Age
Books that were printed prior to 1501 (i.e. incunables) are always rare because they were printed using the earliest stages of printing in Europe and are thus available in very limited quantities nowadays. One very popular example of those is The Gutenberg Bible of 1455, with a current estimated price of $25−35 million.
13) First
When a book is the first of its kind, it usually becomes rare. That can be, for instance, the first book printed in a specific language (e.g. Spanish), a specific location (e.g. Canada), or perhaps a specific binding type (e.g. cloth). Recuyell of the Historyes of Troye, the first book ever printed in the English language, sold in the United Kingdom in 2014 for over one million pounds (about 1.36 million US dollars).
Conclusion
Those are the main things that make a book desirable and eventually rare or hard to find.
Again, those attributes are not exclusive. A book can have a unique content, in great condition, first edition, and also signed by the author. Consequently, this book copy may attain extra rarity and value.
